We produced and packaged millions of words and hundreds of images. Some of us continued to venture into our quiet, hollowed-out newsrooms to put shows to air. In the field, we learned how to interview at a safe distance, how to clean vehicles and gear after every assignment. Some of our staff were verbally harassed on the streets for doing their jobs, a worrying sign that the polarization and delegitimization of journalism, so fervently stoked by some camps in the U.S., has taken root in this country. Less well-known, however, was that Harris’s aunt and uncle live in Canada — in fact, Harris referred to her aunt during her speech to the Democratic National Convention last summer. Ja The news is not great right now. Some provinces and territories are looking at a rise in caseloads that will make other spikes look easy. We are seeing COVID-19 show up in clusters in parts of the country that were previously spared. We are learning about deeply worrying projections that will put an unprecedented strain on parts of our healthcare system. Atlantic Canada, in its now famous bubble, still seems to be holding strong. Let’s hope that continues. Elsewhere though, there is a palpable fatigue among Canadians after more than a year in this crisis, with the realization that we are not turning the corners we thought we would by now. It’s hard on everyone. And it is hard on us too. We live in these communities and we are all impacted. Yes, vaccines are coming, but they are not coming fast enough for so many people facing the hard realities of having their lives turned upside down by job losses and job pauses, home schooling, closures, illness and death. Being a journalist at this time is especially challenging. We have done some remarkable journalism throughout this health crisis. What we are now seeing is that “reinfections are the norm” With that starting point, the story looks at why reinfection is now conmon and asks if future infections will be mider than the first’? Good question. But the answer it says Is “hazy” and goes on to speak with experts who explain why the answer is not clear. You wrote that the story is “wrong’ because it reports that “repeat COV ID infections provide a lasting inmrune response.” It does not. In fact, while the headline asks if each round will feel rilder, immediately below that the story’s sub-headline adds, while “reinfection should get easier for healthy adults,” it cautions, “scientists say infection still comes with risks.” The story that follows explains why. Science rarely offers black and white answers, and this is no exception.
